All you need to do is push a button when you want to enjoy a cozy fire, and then push a button when you’re done.

Instead of wood, logs for a gas fireplace are made from cement, ceramic, or ceramic-fiber blends that are carefully crafted and painted to look just like real wood logs. You can even choose from a wide variety of styles of wood species and whether you want a neat pile or a more rustic set up.

Of course, the sturdy logs will eventually wear out and need to be replaced, but the timing can depend on whether they are vented or vent-free, how well you care for them and how often you use your gas fireplace. A well-maintained vented log set with ceramic logs can last a decade or longer. A similarly well-maintained vent-free log set with ceramic logs can also last a long time, but, if heavily used, will begin to wear out in five years or so.

1. Cracks or breaks: Cracks, chips, or breaks may appear suddenly or gradually over time, but when they become noticeable you need to replace your log set.
2. Uneven flames: If flames are flickering or uneven, it’s usually indicating that one or more of the small gas jets are blocked. While this is an easy repair you need to call a pro.
3. Unfamiliar noises or popping sounds: Unusual popping sounds are most often a signal that your logs are starting to break down.
4. Unusual smells or odors: If you notice a rotten egg smell, turn off the fireplace and leave the house, then call 911. Be sure you know what to do if you smell gas any time in your home.
5. Ignition or shutoff trouble: If your logs don’t ignite or shut off, the problem may be with your gas line. Call for a professional technician to come out and inspect your fireplace.

Gas Log Maintenance

A professional inspection every year will help ensure your gas log set will last it’s full lifespan. The technician will check to make sure all the pipes and connections are in good shape and will look for cracks and breaks in the logs. If the logs are beginning to break down, they’ll let you know your logs need to be replaced.

Vent-free log sets should have the ember bed and logs cleaned to remove any buildup. If you have vented gas logs, you’ll need to have your chimney inspected and swept once a year, too.
